Gunkanjima thrived as a coal mining city with cutting-edge urban functions, including elementary and junior high schools, an underground department store, a movie theater, restaurants, a pachinko parlor, and a hospital. However, due to the national energy policy shift, the mine was closed in 1974, and all the islanders left the island. Today, its unique, retro landscape captivates many Japanese people.
