Be a mage, a God of control. Learn to to solve combat situations with a wide variety of spells. Summon minions, paralyze enemies, wall them off, burn them, poison them, and more. If you die, you lose all that you carry. Some enemies are dumb and easy to fight, some will make you cry.

You're a mage. You have many tools and power at your disposal, but you are also fragile. Skill is the only progression in this game.
Before each run, buy reagents and potions. The more you buy, the more comfortable you'll feel while fighting. But if you die, you drop it all. Customize the UI with the spells you like. Learn to use them. Find what works against each enemy and situation.
Some monsters are stupid and consistent, and will be easy to fight. Some will show you no mercy.
