Sidebar Sea: Idle Fishing for Your Taskbar

He was here before you installed anything. Sidebar Sea is a 42-pixel-wide strip of ocean that lives on the edge of your desktop. There is a dock, some water going down into the dark, and an old man who fishes. He does not need you. He is going to keep fishing whether you are watching or not. That is the entire premise, and everything else is built to protect it.Your clock is the game's clock. Dawn at your desk is dawn on the bay. Night species only bite at real night. The moon follows the actual lunar calendar, so full-moon fish are catchable seven nights a month and no others. Weather rolls through on its own schedule. The Storm Belt is not a place you sail to. It is a state the whole map enters while it rains. Forty legendaries, and not one of them is luck. Every one is gated on being somewhere, at some time, with the right gear. Bites in the hour after rain stops, but not while it falls. Full moon, and only the nights the moon is truly full. Show a light during the count and it aborts. You do not grind a legendary. You read the rumour, work out what it means, and go and be there. Solve all forty and water opens up that the charts do not cover. Click if you want to. Nothing punishes you for not. When the bobber dips you get three seconds to grab it. Win the catch bar and the fish pays 1.6x, rolls heavier, and can jump a whole rarity band. Miss it and the fish still lands, in your index, at its honest price. Playing actively is a bonus, never a tax. A harbour of fifty, and nobody has to be online. Their boats really do cross your strip on their own schedules. Wave back, it costs nothing. The Night Market's prices move on what your harbour actually landed this week, so "everyone is dumping herring" is a fact about people, not a random number. Bottles wash up carrying real hints written by real players. Eight all-time leaderboards, mirrored to Steam. It will still be there in month four. Sixty levels and three perk lines. Five mastery ranks on each of the 120 species. Twelve relics pulled up on the line, about one cast in nine hundred. Four hundred and eighty field studies. And sixteen almanac species, four per season, each catchable only within its own three months. Filling that page takes a year of real calendar however good you are. It runs quietly and it never nags. Under 1% CPU. No pop-ups, no daily-reward guilt, no notifications begging you to come back. Closing the window does not quit the game. The old man puts up an umbrella and dozes in your system tray, still there when you want him.
