The 3310 Paradox

There is a phone on the table. You know this phone. Everyone does. The brick from the 2000s that went through stairwells, washing machines, winters and at least one relationship, and came out the other side with a scratch it wore like a medal. It's sitting in front of you now. The screen is off. It is waiting. You have one finger. This Will Be Quick That's what everyone thinks. You tap it. Nothing. You tap it harder. Still nothing, but the number in the corner moves, and moving numbers have a way of making you reasonable about unreasonable things. So you find something better than a finger. Then something better than that. - A ring, tapped against the glass. Just to hear the sound it makes. - A TV remote with batteries older than some of your friendships. - Your mother's rolling pin. Her frying pan. Her patience, eventually. - A hammer. An honest tool for what has stopped being an honest hobby. - A crowbar, because there is famously no counter to a crowbar. Thirty escalations in total. The last ones are not household items. The last ones are not really items at all. You'll get there — that's the part that should worry you. Something Is Wrong Here You'll notice it before the game says it. Probably around the point where you're spending numbers with names you had to look up, on equipment that shouldn't leave a planet intact, aimed at a phone that costs less than lunch. The phone will still be there. We're not going to explain that. Finding out what this thing actually is — and what happens when you finally push it past its limit — is the entire point, and we would ruin it by telling you. Some people work it out in an hour. Some people are still arguing about it. What You Actually Do - Click. Then buy better ways to click. The oldest and most honest loop there is. - Keep the rhythm. Sustained combos multiply your damage. Hesitate and you lose the streak. - Watch for the rare ones. Some moments are worth twenty of the others. They don't last. - Walk away. The work continues without you. Come back to hours of progress already banked. - Fourteen achievements. A few of them you'll get on purpose. A few you won't see coming. The room around you changes as you go. So does what you're allowed to bring into it. Built Like The Thing It's About The entire interface is a monochrome LCD — green backlight, blocky pixels, that exact shade of grey-on-grey. Menus scroll like you're thumbing through a phone in 2003, waiting for someone to call. It's the only honest way to make a game about this particular object. There's a phone on the table. Go on.
