Every horse burns its own energy reserve, and once that reserve is gone, it doesn't come back. - Draft is a real resource. Tuck in behind the horse ahead and you burn measurably less energy at the same speed. That saving doesn't turn into speed — it turns into fuel you keep for the finish - The outside lane has a measurable cost. Running wide means hundreds of extra metres over a 2000 m race. Claiming a spot on the rail isn't a preference, it's a necessity. - Pace is a budget.
