Water Margin: Defiance is an action role-playing game. Set against the backdrop of the 14th-century Chinese literary classic Water Margin (Outlaws of the Marsh), it reinterprets a story about "destiny" and "choices." Following the original novel's mythology, the game is built around the hidden premise that the "Thirty-Six Heavenly Spirits and Seventy-Two Earthly Demons" descended to the mortal world to cause chaos, while the "Thirty-Six Thunder Gods" were sent by heaven to subdue them. You play as a scion of a noble family caught in the crossfire of war — whether you are destined to be one of those demon-quelling Thunder Gods remains uncertain. Likewise, the true nature of those who hunt the demons — good or evil — is also unknown. The story takes place during a critical period: after the Liangshan outlaws have accepted amnesty, following their northern campaign against the Liao, and as they march south to suppress the Fang La rebellion.
