Starting from a plain white ball, get to work by dipping it into paint cans, using tools, and figuring out the correct order of actions to manufacture the right ball. For example: the target ball might be red on top and blue on the bottom. Maybe you should paint the ball red first, then put on a helmet to protect the top half before dipping it into blue paint...
