Follow twelve-year-old Haechan's journey as he gets swept up in Korea's Donghak movement. Select scenes are brought to life through live-action footage filmed on location. Background: Joseon, the 1890s. Twelve-year-old Haechan lost his mother to illness and his father to a tax he could never pay, and now works as a stable boy at a small relay station near Wonju — dreaming only of a way out. One day he meets a fugitive old man wanted nationwide for a bounty of a thousand nyang. The old man turns out to be Choe Si-hyeong, the second leader of the Donghak movement. Not knowing who he's really helping, Haechan starts carrying secret letters for the movement, and slowly begins to hear the old man's quiet teaching: Innaecheon, "people are heaven." As the letters take him across Joseon and closer to the moment history already wrote for 1898, Haechan is pushed, again and again, to choose between his own survival and someone else's.
