The story takes place in a fictional empire built around a vast inland sea, composed of twelve kingdoms, duchies, city-states, and autonomous territories. During the reign of the old emperor, the empire's unity was maintained through military power and political prestige. After the old emperor's death, the young you inherit the throne.
